20 May, World Bee Day

The aim of World Bee Day is to raise awareness among the world public about the importance and protection of bees and other pollinators. They are increasingly endangered and therefore need the protection of their natural environment, which will enable them to survive. In addition to bee products, which are considered quality food, their biggest contribution is the pollination of almost three quarters of all plants.

The UN Member States approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day in December 2017 on Anton Janšas birthday. Anton Janša was the first beekeeping teacher at the Viennese imperial court, who in the 18th century completely revised the hitherto beekeeping methods based on his findings and laid the foundations of modern beekeeping.
